Né en 1983 à Roubaix, LEM est venu à la peinture par le biais du graffiti au début des années 2000. Son travail sur toiles et en volume est devenu indissociable des peintures murales réalisées au cœur de l’espace public : les contraintes et libertés des réalisations sur support mural influençant son travail d’atelier et vice-versa. Le plus souvent une peinture sur toile a vu naître son ébauche sur un mur. L’urgence de la création en milieu urbain nourrissant le travail plastique réalisé dans l’intimité et le confort de l’atelier.
"Peindre en extérieur, sur un mur en brique ou en parpaing, est devenu une vraie drogue. Une semaine ou deux sans et un manque presque physique commence à se manifester. On y prend vite goût, peindre des murs jusqu'à l'overdose, tel est le but. En guise de cure de désintoxication, je me concentre sur les toiles et le volume. Mais ensuite, inlassablement, je reviens vers le mur."

Born in Roubaix in 1983, LEM came to painting through graffiti in the early 2000s. His work on canvas and in volume has become inseparable from the murals he creates in public space: the constraints and freedoms of his creations on walls influencing his studio work, and vice-versa. Most of the time, a painting on canvas is first sketched on a wall. The urgency of creating in an urban environment feeds the plastic work carried out in the intimacy and comfort of the studio.
"Painting outside, on a brick or breeze-block wall, has become a real drug. A week or two without and an almost physical lack begins to appear. You'll quickly get the hang of it, painting walls to overdose - that's the goal. As a detox, I'm concentrating on canvases and volume. But then, tirelessly, I return to the wall."
